Ditch the Jeans

by Sana on January 27, 2012

I don’t get why people wear jeans.

They are not comfortable at all, and in fact when I come home the first thing I do is change out of them.

Blah. Yoga pants for life.

I guess when I got dressed at 7:30am yesterday morning, jeans seemed appropriate for the first day of my last semester of college.

Clearly my sister had the same idea!

P.s my sissy and I are going to the same college together, super proud of her!

I don’t know why I go out and spend ridiculous amounts of money on food, when the best cook I know lives with me. Thankfully, I have leftovers that I can bring with me to work.

After lunch, I found myself at a lake with a goober smile on my face. I guess, I am really happy to be back in school. My classes seem manageable and I know I have the potential to have an amazing semester academically and on the work front.

Since my last class of the day ended at 7pm, I snagged a grilled cheese sandwich at Grilled Cheese & Co with my friend Kelli.

We both got the same thing, the Crabby Melt and have yet to try anything different.

It was gooey, messy, cheesy and delicious. Just like any grilled cheese sandwich should be.

After being out of the house for 12 hours of class and work, I reallly wanted to lay down and veg out on the couch. But I managed to do a pathetic little workout in the comfort of my home gym.

A deflating ball from Five and Below, I guess this is what happens when you pay $5 for something.

1 yoga mat

1 10 lb weight, who knows where the other one is.

I made it work, in my yoga pants, frilly tank top and dangly earrings that I was wearing earlier in the day.

Once I was done, I went back on the couch.

You know how I jokingly mention that I feel like I am “allergic to vegetables” because they cause painful stomach cramps and bloating/gas when I consume them. Well a few of you guys have contacted me about the  FODMAP hypothesis and how it might benefit me.

What the effff?

I know it’s poor taste to self diagnose of the internet (Hello, Dr. Google?), so I decided to do a little bit of research. I use PubMed in many of my science classes and I wanted to share bits of an article that I found.

I will obviously  consult my primary care physician before making any dietary changes.

This article, Personal view: food for thought – western lifestyle and susceptibility to Crohn’s disease. The FODMAP hypothesis, was published in the Journal of  Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics.

The article goes on to explain the environmental factors with possible genetic factors that can be related to Crohn’s disease.

I don’t think I have Crohn’s, and I would never self diagnose but I used the article to learn more about FODMAP’s.

It does not hurt to be informed.

“A new hypothesis is proposed, by which excessive delivery of highly fermentable but poorly absorbed short-chain carbohydrates and polyols (designated FODMAPs – Fermentable Oligo-, Di- and Mono-saccharides And Polyols) to the distal small intestinal and colonic lumen is a dietary factor underlying susceptibility to Crohn’s disease.

The subsequent rapid fermentation of FODMAPs in the distal small and proximal large intestine induces conditions in the bowel that lead to increased intestinal permeability, a predisposing factor to the development of Crohn’s disease.

Evidence supporting this hypothesis includes the increasing intake of FODMAPs in western societies, the association of increased intake of sugars in the development of Crohn’s disease, and the previously documented effects of the ingestion of excessive FODMAPs on the bowel.

This hypothesis provides potential for the design of preventive strategies and raises concern about current enthusiasm for putative health-promoting effects of FODMAPs.” [Source]

It is interesting to note how our dietary patterns have changed in the past 20 years. Basically over the course of my lifetime.

Here is a link to the food items in the FODMAP diet. I obviously don’t do anything with that d-word, but many items on the list in the high FODMAP section were ones that don’t bode well with me.

Will I run out to the grocery store and stock up on every item fit for the FODMAP diet?

No, but I will feel slightly less crazy when I mention to my doctor how I feel when I eat a salad or some hummus.

If you are interested in the FODMAP hypothesis do your own research and consult your physician/ a medical professional  before making any major dietary changes.

I’m so jealous of your grilled cheese! It’s seriously my favorite food of all time.

I wish I had yoga pants for every day of the week so I’d never have to wear jeans again.

I used to hate wearing jeans also. They always felt super stiff and uncomfortable. But, a few years ago I got sized and fitted properly and I’ve completely fallen in love with them. A good pair that fit properly are super comfortable.

So true, the skinny jeans I was wearing fit like a glove. I have another pair that are a size up from Target and the material is softer, I love those.
Proper fitting clothes can do miracles for someone’s figure.

I HATE JEANS TOO!! AGGGG!! I have to wear them a lot for work, so I actually buy a size bigger because I like them super baggy; I probably look like a gangster in them! But really, I hate them because they never fit right. My thighs are those of a runner so they don’t ever fit in anything. Stupid jeans.

I used to think the exact same thing about jeans until I found the most comfortable and cutest pair I’ve ever owned. And get this…they are made by Juicy Couture! Who would have thought?

Feel better my friend. I’ve heard this FODMAP thing has helped a lot of people!

Heya Sana – I read your blog every day and it was this post that made me want to comment. Like you I have really bad issues with bloating etc (although veggies and I seem to get along). So at the moment, I’m currently on the journey to quitting sugar and I think the FODMAP theory/food is basically about the effect sugar has on our bodies (I believe people who are usually on the FODMAP style of eating have something called fructose malsorption which means their bodies can’t absorb the fructose part that is in most sugars)

Since I have reduced the amount of fructose/sugar in my diet over the last 2-3 weeks – the biggest thing I have found is that my bloating has all but disappeared. I feel lighter, no energy slumps and I’m on my way to not being addicted to the sweet stuff.

You might want to have a read around and see if this is something that makes sense to you and perhaps be the cause of your discomfort. Or, maybe for a week or so, try reducing the amount of sugar (including fruit) in your diet to see if that helps!

Thank you so much for reading :)
I do have a question, after eating sugar, when do you notice the bloating and the pain?
I immediately notice the bloating/gas after I eat certain vegetables and beans.

To be honest – it’s pretty gradual which is why I could never figure out the cause of it – usually by the end of the day I’d look like I was 5 months pregnant!

But the only thing that has changed from my diet has been removing fructose/sugar and it had an immediate effect. Your possibly sounds like it’s from the fibre from the beans and vegetables (broccoli etc??) then?.
