Blame it on the endorphins, but I basically want to take all the fitness classes ever! Can you tell that I am loving being able to workout again?
Yesterday, in between work and class I decided to checkout a Cardio TRX class that was being offered at my gym. The Cardio TRX class was described as a 60 minute fusion class involving TRX Suspension Training with fat burning cardio intervals. (I opted to only do the TRX portion).
I was a bit nervous when I realized the straps for the class were just hanging from a small hook on the ceiling, but the trainers (Bonnie Pace and Erik Foust at the Columbia Gym) reassured me that I was safe.
Right off the bat, Erik and Bonnie worked with me on the proper formation with the TRX Suspension Training system. I was surprised at how many exercises we could do with just our own body weight:
- Bicep curls
- Back Rows
- Triceps exercises
- Planks
- Squats
- Curtsy Squats
- Hamstring Tuck and Curl
- Suspended Incline Press
- Mountain Climbers
- Single (arm/leg) squat row
Check out more TRX moves on YouTube!
These were just some of the few exercises we were able to pack into 60 minutes. The general format of the class is that you do as many reps as you can in 30 seconds. Within just one or two reps, my arms were burning, but I was honestly having too much fun to care.
Additionally, each exercise could be modified from easy to difficult just by where you position your feet and your arms.![]()
The hardest part for me was adjusting to not standing straight up, keeping the straps taut and engaging my core, even while I was working my biceps I was encouraged to engage my abdominal muscles.
Some of the exercises involved me using just one arm to pull myself back up from a squatting position. I was defiantly starting to sweat during this exercise, pulling my body weight up is no joke!![]()
I was totally holding on for dear life.
My favorite part of the class was holding a suspended plank, can you see my smile? I also appreciated how safe the exercises were and the attentiveness of the trainers to correct my form, I never felt like I was doing something that could potentially hurt my back even more.
Thank you Erik and Bonnie for an awesome class, you guys made me feel like a pro by the end!
I would highly recommend anyone who is interested in trying out a TRX class to go ahead and do so, I can barely type this blog post because my arms are so sore. Additionally, don’t assume TRX is just a shoulder and arm workout I was able to work my entire body using the suspension system.
I am definitely going to sign up for another class next week! If you would like to see a video of some TRX movements I found this video that has some of the exercises that I did in the class.
The only downside to the class is that you don’t realize how sore you are going to be the next day!
I am not sure how much a class like this would run in your area, since this is a part of a membership plan that I have. However, it ranges from $200-300 for an 8-week session depending on where you live and what memberships you have.
Have you ever tried a TRX Suspension Training Class?

Ooh, you’ve really got me wanting to try TRX! Looks like hard work but fun at the same time! And I’ve just gotta try that suspended plank! Love your blog name!
Thanks, I love my name as well. I loveeeed the suspended plank! We also did this one thing where I put my legs together and swung from side-too much fun.
This workout looks awesome!! I wish we had something like this over here, i’d definitely be on it! :)
Look around, you might have some classes at your local community centers!
No! Haha. You are so hardcore!! :P
Sometimes I am too hardcore for my own good!
I was always intimidated by the TRX stuff at my old gym. But it actually looks like a lot of fun! I love using my bodyweight to workout – makes me feel like a badass! And the best workouts are the ones that leave you super sore. :)
Something about being suspended makes me feel badass :)
Hello Sana, I have been in one of your bootcamp classes before at UMBC and I had a question– is there a reason you go to another gym vs. exercising at other instructors’ group fitness classes at UMBC?
Hi Aditi- I have a gym membership with my family so I take advantage of all the classes that I have available.
Thanks for checking out my blog :)
Absolutely love the TRX! I both personally use it in my workouts and train others to use it as well; it’s so functional and really brings another dynamic into working out! The power pull you’re doing in a picture is a fave!
Gosh you are so lucky! I really had so much fun, and I was so sore for many days after. I guess I am out of shape ;)
