My 2017 {The Engagement}

This year, 2017 was an incredibly transformative and life changing year in my life, my family’s life and other loved ones. I have not really blogged much at all this year or the past few years and I should just stop paying my hosting fees. However, every time I get the notice to shut down the blog or pay up. I pay up. So let me tell you a bit about what I’ve been up to this past year.

My success this year started off at the end of 2016, where I decided to join Weight Watchers in an effort to change my eating and lifestyle habits. After losing 12 pounds in 2016, I am ending 2017 with another 14 pounds down.

While I did not lose a whole lot of weight this year, I have made lasting changes in my eating habits which kept me from gaining back all the weight that I had lost. I learned in 2017 that it was not the hours spent that the gym that brought me the most weight loss success. It was the daily eating choices I made. I was able to successfully enjoy food at smaller portions with out feeling totally deprived. This is something that I have struggled with for many years as you have seen documented on this blog. Until this year, I have never been able to maintain any sort of weight loss progress. I think being so close to 200 pounds was a huge wake up call for myself. I did not lose the weight overnight and it was a slow progress that has changed my life.

I also made a few major life changes that directly allowed myself to live a happier life which made losing weight all that much easier. A lot of my weight gain was due to unhappiness professionally and other life stressors.

At the end of March 2017, I left my job as a Research Associate in Ovarian and Endometrial cancer research to start grad school. This was a huge decision for me to make and in the end leaving the job that jump started my career in the field of science was the right decision for me to make. I never thought I would have the opportunity to start my masters degree. But I finally took the plunge and decided to go after it. I first took the GRE in 2009 to get my masters in public health but at that time I had no idea why or what I was doing. So I never even applied.

In April of 2017, one of my long time photography clients recommended me for a job opening in the field of Regulatory Affairs. And I got the job! The timing could not have been more perfect since I was getting my masters degree in biotechnology with a focus in regulatory affairs. Doing a masters program online has been the best for my learning style. I would highly recommend it to anyone that is interested! I have just finished my second semester and will be done with my degree in the spring/summer of 2018. The only thing I won’t recommend is planning a wedding, getting engaged, grad school, running a photography side hustle and working full time all at the same time. More on that below!

Speaking of photography…2017 was a huge year for my photography side hustle. I was able to photograph many of my recurring clients and add a few new clients that I look forward to capturing again in 2018. I may not blog much at all, however from what started off as taking pictures of my food for this blog in 2008 has turned into a busy photography side hustle where I photograph humans over the weekend. Often 2-3 sessions at a time. It was exhausting and such a privilege to capture theses special moments in my client’s lives. Every time I say that I won’t work 7 days a week anymore, I take on another client! Hopefully, in 2018 I will be able to come up with a more streamlined schedule.

On to the engagement!

The best part of 2017 has been getting engaged to Aman, my fiancé and having our families share in our happiness and joy. A few pictures from our special day below:Aman and I decided, to incorporate our families in our engagement and have a more traditional / planned engagement in front of our parents and close family.

Even though we made the decision to get married with ourselves and our parents a few months ago. It was a special moment for us and our families to formally say “YES!!” And share our good news with our family, friends and community. I have enjoyed trying to navigate getting married in America while respecting the Indian/Pakistani traditions of our parents and elders. It is quite comical at times.

The joy of seeing my parents and family so happy has been 100% worth it and we all can’t wait to celebrate with our relatives and friends from around the world come July 2018.

I will admit, I am a bit sad as 2017 ends. It was an absolutely wonderful and challenging year especially having to celebrate my engagement as well as finish grad school finals the same weekend. But seeing my final passing grades brought myself a huge feeling of accomplishment. In 2016, I was hugely overweight, I was at a job that was not the best fit for myself and I did not know where I was headed personally and professionally. I was able to change my whole life in the span of a year and create a future for myself that I am truly looking forward to.

2017 might not have been the best for a lot of people but I am greatful, and thankful for all that I have been able to accomplish this year and wanted to take a few minutes on this last day of 2017 to type up this post.

I have a lot of hope for 2018 and I hope to share a lot more of my life with Aman on this platform.

Happy New Year!

    Congratulations on your engagement! I got married when I was in Junior year, and the wedding was during the school year, and my husband moved across the country to Michigan and started a new job two weeks before our wedding…so I can imagine a little bit of what it feels like to try to do “everything” at once like that! I’ve sometimes considered grad school, but have never had a good enough reason to put the time and money into it, we’ll see if I ever get that reason!
